GUIDED INTERPRETIVE HIKES
In 1996, Terry Sprague developed a program of outdoor interpretive events for Quinte Conservation. The program was founded on a series of Monday evening guided hikes from May through June, a series which still continues today, although in 2005 the series was expanded to include July and August as well - a total of 18 hikes for the entire series. There is also a Wednesday evening series to accommodate the overflow. The interpretive hikes are geared to families and generally last about two hours, and commence at 6:00 p.m. sharp. The 2008 schedule includes hikes along Prince Edward County's Millennium Trail, Massassauga Point, Cataraqui Trail at Newburgh, H.R. Frink Centre, Trans Canada Trail at Tweed, and Sandbanks Provincial Park, to name just a few. Complete schedule is always online by January 1st. However, this series at $25/person has become so popular that it is usually fully booked by late March. The Quinte Conservation program also includes a number of full day hikes at only $20/person, most of which take place in the fall, at popular locations such as Depot Lakes Conservation Area at Verona and Sheffield Conservation Area south of Kaladar, as well as a number of Quinte area locations. These hikes also fill up quickly and those interested in participating should register upon seeing the event advertised. For a list and description of the 2011 hiking program, keep checking this website as they are online by January 1st, or e-mail Terry Sprague and a program in a Word format will be sent out to you once it becomes available. A few of the more current hikes are also on the NatureStuff website, and may be accessed by clicking on any of the applicable links.
Quinte Conservation is also a proud sponsor of the Prince Edward County Birding Festival. Terry Sprague is on hand during the second week of May at Prince Edward Point to lead guided hikes nearly every morning at 8:00 a.m. For information on the Prince Edward County Birding Festival, keep checking the EVENTS section of this website. CUSTOMIZED HIKES The Quinte area is rich in natural history, and customized hikes are available for any sized group. Fees can be structured to accommodate the clients’ needs and time required in the field, from short one hour hikes in a popular conservation area, to all day hiking or birding trips, or kayaking/canoeing adventures to such destinations as Frontenac Provincial Park, Depot Lakes Conservation Area, or wherever you need some nature interpretation or guidance. For events of three or fewer people, a vehicle is provided.
