Silhouettes & Reminscing

FOR SALE:  'Silhouettes and Reminiscing'

Just published in August, 2009. Silhouettes & Reminiscing. An 80-page book of poems, written by Nola Sprague of Prince Edward County. Separated into three different sections, the book is a compilation of Nola’s best efforts, divided into Early Beginnings, Influential Experiences, and Nature’s Themes. The collection of 35 poems looks at her life growing up in the community of Coe Hill, south of Bancroft, with poems like ‘Northern Pioneer', ‘The Blue Glass Beads’ and ‘This Old House.’

The book then merges into topics which have further inspired her such as ‘Tribute To A Barn’, ‘Kente Bay’,  ‘Motherhood’ and 'Oh My Son.’   Influenced somewhat by her naturalist husband, Terry Sprague, Nature’s Themes offers such poems as ‘Walking With Nature’, ‘Travellers of the Woods’, and ‘The Old Maple Tree’. The book is illustrated with more than 40 black and white photos.

Silhouettes and Reminiscing is available from the author at $15/book, or by mail at $20/book (includes postage and handling).

"Up Before Five - the Family Farm"

by Terry Sprague

“Up Before Five – the Family Farm” by Terry Sprague is a humorous look at an era of  growing up on a small farm at Big Island, on the shore of the Bay of Quinte, near Demorestville.  It is 200 pages containing stories of ornery cows, spring tillage, baling hay, picking tomatoes and doin’ chores. Sprinkled in among the misadventures are a few sad stories of losing beloved family pets and the tragic crash of a jet plane, only a few fields away. Included, are stories of school days with one teacher for all grades, and how one of those teachers had a love of nature that was infectious. It is the story of a father and a mother, and their two kids, who learned to drive tractor at the age of nine, toiled and laughed in the fields together, and sat down to a meal, together.

“Up Before Five” is a nostalgic look at how farming was done in the 1950s to 1970s, when “we all got up before five, to work the family farm, together”.  It was an era of neighbour helping neighbour and dropping in unexpectedly for a social visit, and impromptu family picnics. This book serves to preserve that disappearing era, when the farm was a friend, a business, and actually a place where one could escape the day to day problems. The 60 black and white photos are from the family archives. The full colour cover was designed by Milford artist, Sacha Warunkiw.
