The Friends of East Lake was established in 2006. President of Friends of East Lake, Linda Cole, explains, that at present, there is no plan for East Lake, and the health of the lake and its community and the sustainability of the remaining rural and agriculture areas around the lake are in question. County Road 10 from Picton down the 11 or 18 that surround East Lake to Sandbanks are designated Tourist Corridors and Scenic Routes. Continued growth is to be expected from the Provincial Park and several other developers in the East Lake area. Our Official Plan points out that the availability of water is an issue everywhere in Prince Edward County. Folks expressed concerns about the effect of the water demands of a huge development on their wells and the level and water quality of East Lake. The Provincial Policy Statement directs the protection and encouragement of Agriculture. These are all reasons why, in our Official Plan, development is encouraged to be in the urban areas such as Wellington and Picton where infrastructure already exists.
MISSION STATEMENT
To monitor and protect the natural habitat, rural lifestyle, and inland fisheries of East Lake and its Watershed and to ensure their preservation for future generations through proper zoning by-laws, environmental protection, measurements of water and air quality, balanced sustainable development, restoration and conservation
