I once came upon a hard cover book at Algonquin Provincial Park\u2019s gift store on the Black Fly. How can any author do that, I asked myself \u2013 devote over 900 pages to a subject that is so annoying as the Black Fly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I soon learned that whatever the subject in nature, there is someone out there with a passion for its life history, and who is willing to devote their time to studying it, and ultimately, coming up with a book that is both informative and riveting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Super Fly” <\/strong>is just that.\u00a0 Author Jonathon Balcombe is a biologist with a PhD in ethology; that\u2019s the study of animal behaviour, and he is author of several popular science books on the private lives of animals. Penguin Books who publish his literary works, describes this Belleville area resident as a person who enjoys \u201cbiking, baking, birding, Bach, and trying to understand the squirrels in his neighbourhood\u201d. \u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Super Fly: Myth-busting biologist Jonathon Balcombe shows the order Diptera in all of its diversity, illustrating the essential role that flies play in every ecosystem in the world as pollinators, waste disposers, predators, and food sources, and recounting how flies fly, think, steal, feel, flirt and mate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Jake and Ava: A Boy and a Fish,”<\/strong> an illustrated children’s book, from The Gryphon Press. This affecting picture book tells the story of Jake, a young boy on his first fishing trip with his grandfather. Jake makes a discovery when he meets Ava, an archerfish, caught on his line. Featuring vivid illustrations of Australian flora and fauna, Jake and Ava <\/em>encourages young children to learn about and empathize with the unique archerfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
