The lighthouse was constructed as a Harbour light in 1881 to guide mariners and local fishermen into the sheltered Long Point harbour. The lighthouse, owned by the Federal Government, was designated under the Federal Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act.

My connection: I led a tour on Prince Edward County Lighthouses for the Quinte Branch of Architectural Conservancy Ontario in 1992 and thereafter did numerous speaking engagements with slide shows on the PEC lighthouses.

I will speak on July 12 on behalf of Prince Edward Heritage Society and Save our Lighthouses regarding the structure and construction of the square pyramidal tower with the attached keepers quarters. Topics include the form relevant to lighthouse design and time period, the heavy timber primary structure, the canted walls carried through, space configuration to accommodate light platform access. Proceeds to various heritage projects undertaken by the organizing parties.

Locally known as the Point Traverse Lighthouse, this structure is actually located on Prince Edward Point, on the south side of Long Point, South Marysburgh Ward.
