Moses Hudgin Log House Fundraising Continues

Fundraising efforts toward the restoration of the unique, Moses Hudgin Log House (MHLH) on Ostrander Point Road in South Marysburgh are underway.

People can support Hudgin Log House restoration efforts by making a charitable donation and becoming a Hudgin Log House sponsor or patron.

The Hudgin House was home to three generations of the Hudgin family, beginning with Moses Hudgin and his wife, Ann. It is located on the Hudgin-Rose Nature Reserve now owned by Nature Conservancy Canada (NCC). The South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI) has taken tenancy of the building and is responsible for the restoration, upkeep and maintenance of the house and surrounding property.

Edwin Rowse, renowned restoration architect, will oversee the restoration.  There are plans for a small Hudgin Family Museum.  The House will be operated as a social enterprise and will be a centre for South Shore field studies and events.  Both a business plan and communication plan are in development.

A restoration committee composed of members of the Hudgin family, members of the PEC Historical Society and local people interested in history has been formed.

So far, the Restoration Committee has raised $60,000 of the $100,000 needed to restore MHLH.

Donations are welcome for any amount. Donations of $20 or more qualify for charitable tax receipts. All donations of $100 or more, will be recognized on a historic plaque to be displayed in the restored House.  There is the opportunity to accumulate contributions over time and increase an individual recognition level.

UPDATE – OCTOBER 01, 2021

• Volunteers have cleared and cleaned the inside and outside of our log house.

• Our main contractor informed us they cannot carry out the scheduled structural restoration work due to Covid.

• As we reschedule structural repair, we are approaching local tradespeople in the hopes of beginning some inside work to MHLH this fall and winter.

• Connecting Hudgin House to the electricity grid via underground cable is on schedule and will be completed soon.

• The Moses Hudgin Log House is already fulfilling its purpose as a resource centre.

• On Saturday September 18, 60 volunteers gathered around the log house after a day of cleaning up areas along 8 roads on the south shore.
