What’s Been Happening?

On September 18th, 60 wonderful volunteers combed the roads and beach areas of the South Shore as part of our annual clean up. What they achieved was impressive but also very alarming.

Almost 1000 pounds of garbage was collected and then disposed

Our South Shore is clearly under siege from irresponsible tourism and overuse.  Without permanent protection, we risk the destruction of 4,000 acres and 12 km of Lake Ontario shoreline. Current overuse, as evidenced by all the garbage collected, will jeopardize the well being of millions of migrating birds, 41 species at risk and threaten the rare alvar or our South Shore’s fragile ecosystem.

All of us need OUR South Shore PROTECTED now!

The process is underway to create Ontario’s first new Conservation Reserve since 1999 and permanently protect 4,000 acres of the South Shore. A South Shore Conservation Reserve will ensure our globally significant public lands will always be accessible to all of us for our own well being. Now more than ever, people appreciate opportunities to be outdoors, enjoy nature and take part in physical, mental and emotionally engaging activities. Protecting the South Shore and spending time enjoying it, will generate long term health benefits for all of us.

The piles of garbage generated by irresponsible tourism and years of illegal dumping exist in tandem with the threats of further habitat loss due to climate change and unprotected usage. To offset this, please continue to support and donate to the South Shore Joint Initiative.

Act Now!

Since 2018, through public education, supporting responsible usage and enabling scientific research, we’ve raised awareness about how the well being of the South Shore and the people who enjoy it are inextricably linked.

As community advocates who are fighting to permanently protect this major migratory pathway from industrialization, development and overuse, we look forward to public input shaping management plans for protected South Shore lands.

NOW is the time to Save OUR South Shore!

To make this happen and offset the onslaught and impact of more garbage, we invite you to step forward to Save OUR South Shore and donate now at SSJI.ca
